September Safety Meeting Topic – Reporting Employee Accidents
The Monthly Safety Meeting topic for September is Reporting Employee Accidents. For FCSIG members, we have attached Tristar’s First Notice Reporting poster. It’s important that all employees call the Nurse Triage Hotline to report all work-related injuries and illnesses. For non-FCSIG members, please review your district’s employee accident reporting procedures with all staff.
Attached you’ll also find a sample Supervisors Accident Investigation Report (fillable PDF form). It’s recommended that a Supervisors Accident Investigation Report form be completed by the employee’s supervisor within 24 hours of the injury or illness.
CAL/OSHA regulations require that employers must report any Serious Injury/Illness or Fatality to the nearest CAL/OSHA District Office. A Serious Injury is defined as “any injury or illness occurring in a place of employment or in connection with any employment which requires inpatient hospitalization for a period in excess of 24 hours for other than medical observation or in which an employee suffers a loss of any member of the body or in which an employee suffers any serious degree of permanent disfigurement, but does not include any injury or illness or death caused by the commission of a Penal Code violation, except the violation of Section 385 of the Penal Code, on an accident on a public street or highway.”
Please see the attached handout regarding CAL/OSHA injury reporting procedures. For more information, please visit the Cal/OSHA website at http://www.dir.ca.gov/title8/342.html.
Each month we will be sending out a 1-2-page Safety Spotlight handout on the upcoming monthly safety meeting topic. This handout should be shared with your Principals and Directors as a tool for conducting a brief 5-10 minute safety overview with all staff (this can be done during regular department meetings). Please remember to have a sign-in sheet each month for your training records.
